David Livingstone :: History
David Livingstone David Livingstone was one of Africaââ¬â¢s most important explorer. He lived from 1813 to 1873. He was originally a Scottish doctor and missionary. Livingstone was born on March 19, 1813, in Blantyre, Scotland. In 1823 he began to work in a cotton-textile factory. While studying medicine in Glasgow, he also attended classes in theology, and in 1838 he offered his services to the London Missionary Society. After completing hid medical course in 1840, Livingstone was later sent as a medical missionary to South Africa. In 1841 he reached Kuruman, a settlement founded in Bechuanaland, now Botswana, by the Scottish missionary Robert Moffat. Even though the Boers, the white settler, mostly of white background were extremely hostile to him, Livingstone kept trying to make his way northward. He married Mary Moffat, daughter of Robert, in 1845. Together, the Livingstones traveled into regions where no other European had ever been to. After crossing the Kalahari Desert in 1849, he discovered Lake Ngami. In 1851, accompanied by his wife and children, he discovered the Zambezi River. On another expedition while looking for a route to the interior from the east or west coast, he traveled north from Cape Town to the Zambezi, and then west to Luanda on the Atlantic coast. Then, retracing his journey to the Zambezi, Livingstone followed the river to its mouth in the Indian Ocean, in this way discovering the great Victoria Falls in Zambezi. After Livingstone's explorations, a revision of all the contemporary maps took place. He returned in 1856 to Great Britainm, where he was already acknowledged as a great explorer. He wrote a book called Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa which made him famous. He resigned from the missionary society, and in 1858 the British government appointed him British consul at Quelimane, what is now in Mozambique, for the east coast of Africa and commander of an expedition to explore east and central Africa. In 1859 he explored the Rovuma River and discovered Lake Chilwa. During his exploration of the country around Lake Nyasa, Livingstone became greatly concerned over the depredations on the indigenous Africans by Arab and Portuguese slave traders. In 1865, on a visit to England, he wrote Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambezi and Its Tributaries, including a condemnation of slave traders and an exposition of the commercial possibilities of the region, now mostly part of Malawi and Mozambique.

Is Macbeth a Shakespearean Tragic Hero? Essay
In many of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays a tragic hero appears and is often the focal point. In order to conclude whether Macbethââ¬â¢s character falls in to that particular category. I need to consider what factors create a tragic hero. The tragic hero often originates as a figure of greatness and someone with a high social status. His greatness often degenerates due to a character flaw of some kind. The essence of many of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragic heroes is that the seemingly good parts of their character turn against them and instigate their downfall. The character always suffers, which creates sympathy within the reader, especially as it is in contrast with previous happiness. Often the actions of the tragic hero create self-inflicted suffering. Other people are generally affected by his tragedy, but on differing scales depending on the play. A deep internal battle often rages within the tragic hero as he battles with his conscience, but he doesnââ¬â¢t often listen to reason. A key factor of the tragic hero is that the audience radiate much pity and sympathy for the character. Even though he has done wrong, he was once great, and he may feel remorse for his actions. At the end of the play the tragic hero invariably dies. This is often for political reasons, or for morale impact. Goodness must always prevail. One of the first factors I stated that creates a tragic hero is someone of greatness. Macbeth has much respect from others because of his braveness on the battlefield. ââ¬Å"For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name- Disdaining fortune with his brandishââ¬â¢d steel.â⬠Macbeth clearly has earnt praise from his peers and conducts approval from those of a higher social status. He is a loyal warrior, whose efforts are also acknowledged by even the King. ââ¬Å"He was a gentleman on whom I built An absolute trust.â⬠Duncan recognises Macbethââ¬â¢s greatness and evidently has a high opinion of him. He respects Macbeth to the point where he invests much trust within him and almost views him as an equal. These feelings from a King hugely re-enforce Macbethââ¬â¢s greatness. ââ¬Å"No less to have done so, let me enfold thee And hold thee to my heart.â⬠This implies a close relationship of affection. Such a close bond conveys that Macbeth must appear a patriotic, and just man especially in the eyes of the King. He is rewarded by adopting the title of Thane of Cawdor. He is growing in social status which is another common trait of a tragic hero. The reader is soon to learn that despite the fact Macbeth appears to be a great man, there are many flaws in his character, the most poignant being excessive ambition. ââ¬Å"Stars hide your fires Let light not see my dark and deep desires.â⬠Macbeth appears shocked at his own evil thoughts. The witchesââ¬â¢ prophecies have instigated the ambitious part of his nature to be accentuated. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦let us speak Our free hearts to each other.â⬠Banquo does not share Macbethââ¬â¢s ambition, so Macbeth lies to his friend. The reader starts to see the extent of Macbethââ¬â¢s ambitious nature. ââ¬Å"And live a coward in thine own esteem I dare do all that may become a man.â⬠A huge character flaw of Macbeth is that he is easily influenced. Lady Macbeth holds so much power over him, and can manipulate him. She overpowers and influences Macbeth greatly and creates a reaction in him that favours her. This easily influenced part of his nature is also shown when the witchesââ¬â¢ prophecies instigate evil thoughts within him. Another common flaw in a Shakespearean tragic hero is jealousy. Macbeth displays this very frequently. ââ¬Å"(Aside) The Prince of Cumberland: that is a step On which I must fall down, or else oââ¬â¢erleap For in my way it lies.â⬠Macbeth is jealous of Malcom, as he is the son of Duncan, this instigates more evil, murderous thoughts within Macbeth. This excessive ambition, jealousy, and easily influenced nature turn Macbeth into a murderer. Despite this, Macbeth knows that Duncanââ¬â¢s murder is not just. Macbeth continually battles with his conscience during the play, and much of this guilt is radiated in his soliloquy, when he can show his true feelings. â⬠â⬠¦As his host Who should against his murderer shut the door Not bear the knife myself.â⬠Macbeth knows his role, as host should be to protect his guest: ââ¬Å"here in double trust.â⬠Macbeth acknowledges the fact that Duncan sees him in a great light and has great respect for him. Macbeth refers to the murder as ââ¬Å"the bloody business.â⬠A euphemism is utilised as Macbeth cannot accept what he is about to do and cannot face up to this evil side of his character. ââ¬Å"This supernatural soliciting Cannot be ill, cannot be good.â⬠Indecisiveness is heavily portrayed here as Macbeth is in a deep internal battle. He knows that treason is wrong, but he also longs to be King, he tries to convince himself his actions can be justified, but his conscience tell him otherwise. Macbeth wants to protect his own title and image, and doesnââ¬â¢t want to face up to the consequences of murder, but still agonises over the decision. Macbeth is evidently suffering greatly because of his conscience. He feels extremely guilty, but tries to hide this fact. We see much evidence of the effect his conscience has on Macbeth after the murder of Duncan. ââ¬Å"Is this a dagger which I see before me? The handle towards my hand?â⬠This quotation conveys to the reader the extent of Macbethââ¬â¢s suffering. He is affected mentally as he hallucinates and is haunted by disturbing images. ââ¬Å"I had most need of blessing and ââ¬ËAmenââ¬â¢ Stuck in my throat.â⬠Macbeth is denied the ability to turn to God. In killing the King he has commited treason against God, so his faith is refused from him. Insomnia is inflicted upon him, and Macbeth can find no solace. ââ¬Å"We have scorched the snake, not killââ¬â¢d itâ⬠This quotation conveys that Macbeth has no peace and stability; he knows he will need to keep on killing. He states his mind of ââ¬Å"full of scorpionsâ⬠clearly showing he is extremely traumatized. Macbeth progresses to be almost envious of Duncan and Banquo. ââ¬Å"Better be with the deadâ⬠¦ Than the torture of the mind to lie In restless ecstasy.â⬠The murders have affected him in such a way that Macbeth yearns for the appealing peacefulness of death. These hint at primary suicidal thoughts, a hugely troubled mind is conveyed. We see more evidence of Macbethââ¬â¢s guilt causing him great suffering when Banquoââ¬â¢s ghost haunts him. He can no longer keep control of himself, and his mental instability is conveyed to his peers. ââ¬Å"Thou canst not say I did it; never shake Thy gory locks at me.â⬠Macbeth visualises this apparition. His mental state is to the extent that he not only acknowledges the ghost, but also interacts with it, even though he is in the presence of his peers. Macbeth is highly affected by this hallucination. Not only does it affect opinion of him, but leaves him troubled and confused. Self-inflicted suffering is a poignant factor within a Shakespearean tragic hero, and another factor that applies to Macbeth. His conscience creates the ghost to be another reminder of the evil he has done. He cannot escape his guilt that his owns flaws and his own faults have manifested. Clearly the murders are having disastrous effects on Macbeth, but his actions also affect others. Macbethââ¬â¢s need to kill results in him planning the murder of Fleance and Banquo. He is jealous of Banquo because he knows his children will never be King. ââ¬Å"Upon my head they placââ¬â¢d a fruitless crown And put a barren sceptre in my gripe.â⬠Macbeth has a great determination to remain King and to protect his status. He almost becomes obsessed by it, and taking peopleââ¬â¢s lives becomes meaningless and just inevitable steps for him/ â⬠Give to thââ¬â¢edge oââ¬â¢thââ¬â¢sword His wife, his babes and all unfortunate souls That trace him in the line.â⬠He is portrayed as being more than willing to kill innocent women and children if they threaten his reign as King. Macbeth is a ruthless tyrant in protecting his throne. Macbethââ¬â¢s actions do not just affect other people, but the earth itself. Macbeth has murdered the King, who was appointed directly by God. This Divine Right of the King means God will punish all earth fro allowing this act of treason occurs. Displeasing God is another common factor within a Shakespearean tragic hero. â⬠Some say, the earth Was feverous and did shake.â⬠This quotation infers how nature is heavily disrupted. Lady Macbeth is deeply troubled as a result of her husbandââ¬â¢s actions. She is traumatised by her conscience, and her guilt overwhelms her. ââ¬Å"Doctor Remove from her the means of all annoyance And still keep eyes upon her.â⬠The Doctor appears adamant that Lady Macbeth will commit suicide, so advises Macbeth to watch over her. She hallucinates and mirrors other forms of suffering that Macbeth radiated. Eventually Lady Macbeth does kill herself, as she has been so heavily affected by her husbandââ¬â¢s deeds. As a result of Macbethââ¬â¢s obsession with remaining King, he proves to be an inefficient one. He is too preoccupied with his guilt and determination the whole of Scotland suffers from his lack of devotion. â⬠Alas poor country Almost too afraid to know itselfâ⬠¦ Where sighs, and groans, and shrieks that rend the airâ⬠This is yet another trait of a tragic hero. He, whether inadvertently or not, greatly inflicts suffering on others. Despite all of this, the reader still feels a sense of pity towards Macbeth. He was once great, and one of the great factors in him turned around to be his downfall. In many ways, Macbeth was influenced into his actions. To begin with the witches planted the idea into his mind, and pushed him into justifying his actions. Lady Macbeth instigated the murder, and manipulated him to carry through with this deed. The inferiority of her gender meant she needed him to act through. ââ¬Å"But screw your courage to the sticking place And weââ¬â¢ll not fail.â⬠Macbeth is very easily influenced, so can be manipulated continually by Lady Macbeth. We also feel a sense of pity, because Macbeth is so heavily affected by his actions. He is traumatised and destroyed. He often shows remorse and regret fro his actions. ââ¬Å"Wake Duncan with thy knocking: I would thou Couldst.â⬠Macbeth is tricked by the witchesââ¬â¢ prophecies. He takes the apparitions literally and is lulled into a false sense of security. â⬠For none of woman born Shall harm Macbeth.â⬠We feel pity as Macbethââ¬â¢s trust and faith in the witchesââ¬â¢ predictions cause his death. He is tricked into feeling protected, but the witchesââ¬â¢ words have other meanings. Readers often feel pity for the Shakespearean tragic hero, but despite this fact we accept he needs to die. Political and moral reasons dictate this fact. If he had lived, then murder and evil could be justified. Treason against the King or Queen or ultimately God could go unpunished. Resulting from the readersââ¬â¢ accumulating sympathy for Macbeth, there is some apparent sadness surrounding his death. He is extremely brave which creates much admiration fro him. ââ¬Å"Though Birnam Wood be come to Dunsinane And thou opposââ¬â¢d being of no woman born, Yet I will try the last. Before my body, I throw my warlike shield.â⬠Macbeth knows his death in an inevitable fact, but despite this he fights to the bitter end. We see some of Macbethââ¬â¢s past greatness in his last moments. Macbeth can be portrayed as a victim, this fact and the fact that he does adds to the effectiveness of the play. It instigates a variation of emotions within the reader, which makes it an intense experience. Without Macbethââ¬â¢s death, much of this would be lost. This ending complies with a tragic heroes exit to a play. I conclude that Macbeth can indeed be classified as a Shakespearean tragic hero. He radiates all of the factors I first portrayed a tragic hero to have. Macbeth falls from greatness due to a character flaw, his suffering is self-inflicted and this affects others. A continual battle with his conscience is conveyed within Macbeth, and the reader is made to pity him. We are left with a classic version of a Shakespearean tragic hero, and a very compelling character. Macbeth exuberates all of the common characteristics of one of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s favourite classifications, but is still an original figure, which greatly adds to the effectiveness of the play.

Hurricanes Storms And Hurricanes - 1226 Words
Hurricanes are unpredictable and extremely dangerous. Not all storms start out as hurricanes. They form out in the ocean near the coast of Africa. Through the hurricanes journey, how fast or slow the storm moves will depend on the weather fueling it. The projected path varies because of wind, rain, size of storm and whether it hit any land or not. Throughout history Florida has been the hardest hit area by hurricanes. Florida has had ten worst hurricanes which caused most people to try and flee from their homes. These hurricanes caused life altering effects and devastation for those who lived in the path of the storm. The three major hurricanes that hit Floridaââ¬â¢s coastline brought intense wind, rain, destruction, and unpreparedness. Although Florida has suffered through many tropical storms and hurricanes, Floridians finally overcame their laxed attitude toward preparation due to the devastation of Hurricane Andrew. The hurricane that hit the Florida Keys gave way to a new destruction against the people living there. This hurricane was not named but it hit on Labor Day, September 1935. The American Meteorologists inscribed the storm as being the most terrifying and placed it in the annuals history book (Reilly B.pg.298).This storm started out small but sat in the Atlantic Ocean where the warm waters helped it to develop stronger. EMERSON Essay Example For Students
EMERSON Essay Society never advances. It recedes as fast on one side as itgains on the other. Although written long ago these wordsby, Ralph Waldo Emerson still hold true today. Everyday insociety people are making improvements, however, butthese improvements also have equal drawbacks. Today weare using cutting edge technology to improve every aspect ofour daily lives. For instance in todays society the fields ofCommunication and Medicine are constantly advancing yetthey both create significant losses. Technology has helpedincrease the speed of communication and decrease its cost. However, at the same time it has caused people to becomemore impersonal with each other. In earlier times the majorform of communication was for people to visit each otherand go to public meeting places. One of the next majoradvances was the telephone. Due to the telephone peopleno longer went to the public meeting places as often as theyused to. As time goes on, new advances still allow people tocontact and communicate with each other more easily. These advances such as faxes, beepers, and electronic mail,although seemingly making life easier, each help to decreasethe earlier forms of communication. The field of medicine,like the field communication, also displays what Emersonwas trying to say. This field too, which had many advances,has also caused many difficulties. As scientists and doctorstry to come up with cures for the many diseases we havetoday, they are also making new ones. For example, whenscientists went to Africa in search of a cure for a disease,they came back with monkeys that were contaminated withthe Emboli virus. Today in Russia there are military baseswhere Russian scientists are creating thousands of germs andviruses to use in germ warfare. These germs and viruses arecapable of killing thousands of people instantly. Astechnology continues to advance and society movesforward, people continue to use the less personal forms ofcommunication, and create new problems in the field ofmedicine. The fear of becoming a society, whichcommunicates only through machines, and creates newdisease, is becoming greater with time. For all of societygains there are equal drawbacks. So as in Ralph WaldoEmerson words society never advances.

Punishment Paper free essay sample
?Unfortunately I made a common mistake in loosing my ID card. As a result I have to write this essay showing that I feel bad or something along those lines. The technical subject of this essay: The importance of maintaining security of sensitive items and responsibility. To get a better understanding, this is how it all went down. I was working in the office and as I recall I grabbed my ID card and put it in my pocket. I left for lunch and when I reached my destination I realized it was gone. After freaking out, I retraced my steps and tried to figure out where it could have dropped. With no success and a realization of utter failure I gave up; and retreated to my superior for help. I heeded the information needed to get a new card. The conversation wasnââ¬â¢t as exultant as it could have been; however Im hardly in a convivial mood these days. We will write a custom essay sample on Punishment Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I went about getting a new card and received it. This would be the part where I expressed how Iââ¬â¢ve learned from my failure and will never do it again. Obviously thatââ¬â¢s not going to happen; however I will jot down the important contents that are required for this gelastic essay. It is exigent to make sure one has his ID on him at all times. The possibilities of peril are endless. It is also important because with items like ID cards it also controls access to sensitive areas such as, getting on and off post. If a lost ID falls into the wrong hands that gives endless possibilities to someone who shouldnt be on post, which can put other soldiers, contractors, and military families in danger. Along with putting them at risk, the fact of government property at risk of thief and/or vandalism can distort ones basic position in the military. There are also very important documents and equipment that if fallen into the wrong hands can be problematic to the government. Accountability is very important and crucial for success in the army. But in the military we utilize specific kinds of identification cards. These cards are for any people that are in or related to the armed forces, whether it is marines, navy, and in my case the army. They are also issued out to family members and their dependents, and civilian Department of Defense workers. Military ID CAC cards are required components of military uniforms in a day-to-day life of a soldier. Amongst ID cards it is important to secure all sensitive items. Sensitive items are anything that is considered classified or a mission essential item. These items can include protective gear, maps, or a piece of paper designating patrol routes. The habits of exercising security and accountability of a soldiers items allow the soldier and their team to operate to the highest standards or have items be accessed by an opposing adversary creating loss of overall mission success. Operational security is a process that denied critical information to an adversary. If one were to obtain the information presented it could be used against friendly forces. Utilizing all assets to maintain and secure sensitive items and classified information promote proper operational security and soldier readiness. All personnel should maintain accountability of all sensitive material to allow full utilization by themselves and anyone involved with the mission and still maintain operational security. Operational security can be compromised through the loss of sensitive items due to loss of equipment used for operational planning, or items used for support missions. Depending on the sensitive item that is being classified it could fall under a different level of security as it is deemed by the government. In my case loosing an ID, government property, can give someone the access to all computers on post allowing them to steal and or hack there way into precious goods the military doesnââ¬â¢t want to get out. Lack of accountability shows a lack of responsibility, and though I am a responsible person i still failed and securing my ID, and there is no room in the military for irresponsibility. Being responsible refers to our ability to make decisions that serve our own interests and the interests of others. We first need to be responsible for ourselves before we can be responsible for others. In learning to be more responsible it is important that we know our limitations. It does not matter how smart we are, there is only so much responsibility that a person can handle. The word responsibility is also defined as a burden. My definition of responsibility is trust. When someone holds you responsible for something, they trust you to do what you are supposed to. Responsibility is something that is easily lost, when you lose some ones trust, they do not see you as a responsible individual. I would like to quote a few references whose information seems to fit very well with this essay: ââ¬Å"We must be effective members of the Joint team. We need to think of our Army as an expeditionary force. We need to encourage innovation and increase resiliency. And most important, we need to reinforce the Warrior Ethos in every Soldier. Being responsible in the US Army has got to be of the utmost importance in my opinion. Throughout the past few months I have been dealing with many problems physically and mentally, and I strongly believe that this has, in part, to blame for my lack of responsibility. Even so, this is really no reason at all to slack on any part of being a responsible soldier. Soldiers must be and act responsibly in every situation they may find themselves in, whether itââ¬â¢s in or out of uniform. Responsibility increases when soldiers believe that they have personal control over their mission performance, performing out of desire to do well instead of just following orders. There have been many studies that have suggested that when a Soldier feels that they have personal control over work performance the result is that the Soldier has a better task performance, better problem solving, a higher persistence in accomplishing the task, more positive emotions and even better psychological and physical health. Responsibility and accountability are two of the main factors in being a successful Soldier in todayââ¬â¢s U. S. Army. You must be a responsible soldier if you want to make it through deployment alive. Or even worse, if you fail to be responsible you could risk someone elseââ¬â¢s life or your entire squadââ¬â¢s lives. In remembrance and to finalize the essay, I must remember that it is very important to secure all my sensitive equipment and items, and maintain accountability. The reason simply is to keep very important high cost valued items and equipment accounted for so people all around me do not have to deal with the consequences of the lost item or equipment. Also every sensitive item or equipment is high dollar valued so if I lose it I will be hurting money wise by losing a grand or more easily right on the spot. And after that I can possibly do jail time from six months to a year and sure their will be rank taken away or something along those lines. Im clearly realizing that it is essential for me to keep this information in my head so that I inexorably avoid punishment to that extent. My scenario isnt nearly as precarious as it may be perceived; however the opinions of a soldier are irrelevant in this or any case. Typing this essay has taught me a bit of a lesson, a more emotionally shutdown point of view. I obviously dont want to do this again and so I will be more careful. I am also taking heed that I must maintain a responsible effigy in the work place so there wont be any question as to what or how much responsibility I can handle. I am a soldier and that will become my utter most priority for now on. I also want to apologize because again the conversation did not go as well as I had hoped, but it is what it is. I feel the responsibility of a soldier is his honour and without honour what else is there. Only with the pride of who I am will I regain the respect that I deserve. This doesnt nearly atone for my carelessness; however it is a start. Now on a more truthful note, this essay was a complete over kill of my time. I clearly did learn the lesson due to the fact that I donââ¬â¢t want to be doing this again. For this to be graded as if some kind of term paper is fortuitous to me is beyond me. Of course this paper has no thought or care into it so Im not going to worry if the dearth of enthusiasm is going to affect my score. Still not caring much, but I know might be a few words short and it will have to do for me. There only so much fake emotion, thought, and plagiarism I can come up with. Otherwise it all sounds repetitive and I donââ¬â¢t want to do that so here is my essay. Enjoy!
